Your Homes Exterior

When it comes to the way your house and your lifestyle is presented to the rest of the world, the way in which the exterior is designed can be just as important, if not more, than your interior. Only a few people will ever see the inside of your home, and usually those people are ones you invite in. The outside it what the average person will judge how much that commercial mortgage company needed to give you for your home! We're not saying interior appearance is not important, but when it comes to the sheer numbers of people who take a look at your home, your exterior will have the interior beat by a long shot.

What this means, of course, is that we spend a lot of time making sure that the outside of our homes give off just as favourable an impression as the inside. We take care of our lawns, plant gardens, decorate, and keep things tidy, even going as far as making the outside of our home look like an English garden on the lawn of historic real estate in London.

Unfortunately, our landscaping habits are in large part to blame for many of the environmental issues that haunt urban areas each year. A particular problem is in water consumption, as people try to keep their grass looking green no matter how much (or how little) rain is falling in their area.

What we want to do in this article is to take a look at some changes you can make to your landscaping that can help the environment, and many times your pocket book as well. Let's get started.

Design according to your ecosystem

Making the outside of your house friendly starts with the design of your home. As you draw up cottage house plans or those for a home, consider the environment in which you live. A gardener in an area with a high annual rainfall has the option of planting more exotic species of flower, greener grasses, and easy to maintain vegetable and so on.

Those living in drier areas, on the other hand, need to be more careful about the vegetation they plan on and plant. It doesn't mean limiting the variety in your yard, just concentrating on plant species that need less water in order to live and look their best. From grass to shrubs and flowers, there are plenty of dry area species that can give a unique look to your yard.

Use permanent decorations

Lots of people like to "dress up" the outside of their homes according to the seasons, and we don't mean the lawns with rusted old cars making the lawn look like an auto dealer supply!. Using different materials year to year means not only more waste generated by your home, but more resources consumed to create more products.

You can cut down on these twin terrors for the environment by using the same decorations over and over again. This means choosing decorations made from hardier material, such as vinyl wall sayings or straw Halloween decorations. These can be painted year to year to give a different impression; the main point is to stop going through a dozen decorations every season.

From consumption to decoration, it is important to pay attention to how our approach to the exterior of our houses affects the environment. We are all responsible for a greener planet.
