There was a time, and it was not long ago, when the idea of the condominium development
wasn't ambitious at all. In fact, a lot of people considered condos to be
the sole dwelling of some of the poorest people in a community. This idea is graphically
illustrated in the movie The Gangs of New York, where poor Irish labourers are
cramped together in dangerous and decrepit housing units. Even just a few decades
ago, those who could afford a sailing boat with a shoal draft keel would have
turned up their noses at the idea of living in a condo complex. What was the point
in having a lot of money, after all, if one didn't own the land and the
building one called home?
Well, times have certainly changed. Today, condo dwelling defines the cutting
edge of urban living. You will find a wide variety of society's most well-to-do
living in condos in some of the trendiest cities all over the world. More often
than not, attorneys, doctors, executive head hunters, and other high positioned
individuals opt for the convenience and the lofty position of a condo over other
types of dwellings.
The relatively new trend towards condo living is a direct result of efforts
by developers and city planners to create more luxury space within older cities,
an idea which has really caught on. In fact, you could say that the concept
of the condominium development is in itself quite ambitious, given the change
in perception which has occurred in regard to condos over the last half century.
In this series of articles, we are going to take a look at some of the most
ambitious projects in an already ambitious genre. Those cranes that you see
in downtown Toronto and in other cities, with their counterweights and heavy
loads, are working to develop condominium projects that will literally blow
the minds of potential buyers.
How will they do that? Well, there are a number of steps in the evolution of
the condo development which have occurred in the last decade to make them some
of the most sought after pieces of real estate within any city. The first step
was the inclusion of amenities; cutting-edge condos often include recreation
rooms, pools, banquet rooms, and lounges for the use of residents. As well,
the most obvious steps of the condo evolutionary process are the architectural
designs that define the project itself. Today's developers vie with one
another when it comes to creating a condo building with the most remarkable
design and conception, creating buildings which stand apart from the rest.

condos are the focus of this series. We'll look at architecture, green
design, size, amenities, and unit - all of the things that set one development
apart from the rest.
