Greener Landscape Design

Today's gardener has more options than ever before when it comes to plant variety and environmentally friendly fertilizers, soil and all things garden! Whether you are just starting out in your landscaping, or you are adding to what you already have in the ground, choosing the right plants can be the key to a beautiful garden. Before you get your hands in the dirt, there are garden centers and greenhouses in many communities that have experts who are willing and ready to help you bring your garden dreams to life, and more importantly, they can help you do it without harming the environment. Anyone can have a beautiful garden and yard, whether you live in Mississauga condominiums or in one of the many beautiful Lindsay Ontario houses, making your lawn as green as possible is easier than you may think.

Let's begin with flower gardens. These beds of vibrant color and luxurious scents can be a beautiful addition to your home, whether it is in your front yard where the neighborhood can enjoy it as well, or in a private area behind your house where it is for your eyes only. Many plants are ecologically smart when it comes to the wildlife of your region. Choosing plants that are favorites for bees, butterflies and birds to eat not only help to sustain the natural diversity in your area, but are just as beautiful as those plants that do not attract these creatures, and often emit stronger and more pleasant aromas. These attractive plant varieties were not produced by scientists in a lab or by electronic design and manufacturing, but by Mother Nature herself, and therefore they are good for the earth and its beings. Planting a veggie garden is a great way to get the most out of nature, and feed your family very inexpensively as well. Choosing seasonal crops will see that your garden produces food all season. Yet not all plants are neutral, and it helps to know about the plants you are putting in the ground.

If you are a pet owner, it is very important to find out which plants are toxic to cats and dogs. This information is abundant online, or can be obtained from your local garden professional. Some common examples include cyclamen, daffodils and day lilies. Another garden addition that pet owners must be careful with is a pond or waterfall, since this water source can be a tempting refreshment to your pet. If you do decide to put a pond somewhere in your landscape design, there are many ecologically responsible ways to keep the water clean and safe. Adding water plants that absorb toxins is one route, or placing UV light aquarium filters in the water, which use the energy from the sun to filter the water. These choices will keep your pond clean and safe, and will maintain the green state of your garden.

An important part of eco-friendly gardening is going organic - whether you are planting flowers or vegetables. This means that your garden and its soil are free of any man-made chemicals which can be toxic to living creatures in the soil, or the animals that will feed on your plants. So no chemical fertilizers or poisons, and no water treatment chemicals added to your garden water. Using these toxins will not only disrupt the delicate ecosystem of your garden, you will be exposing yourself and your pets to these poisons. Organic gardening really only requires two simple steps, lay down compost underneath anything that you plant, and stay away from any chemicals.
